How to Get to College
What Classes Do I Need to Take?
A. English: 4 years of college-prep English
B. Math: 3 years including Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, or higher
C. History: 2 years including 1 year of World History and 1 year of US History
D. Laboratory Science: 2 years with a lab science (Biology, Chemistry)
E. Language: 2 years of the same language
F. Visual and Performing Arts: 1 year
G. College Preparatory Elective: 1 year of any college preparatory subject
*Colleges only accept grades of “C” or higher.
Follow the Steps in Each Grade Level to Get to College:
9th Grade:
-take the required and elective courses to meet admissions standards (see above)
-earn the highest Grade Point Average (GPA) possible
-get involved with activities at school (inc. drama, sports, ASB, agriculture, etc.)
-create a resume, saving report cards, awards, honors, etc. (update every semester)
10th Grade:
-Review your 9th and 10th grade schedule with your counselor to make sure you are enrolled in college-prep classes
-Strive for your best grades possible.
-Take the PSAT on October 17, 2012.
-Participate in the PLAN in January or when offered.
-Get involved with at least one new extracurricular activity.
-Update your resume file.
-Ask you counselor if you should take the SAT Subject Exams.
-Participate in summer workshops, a community college course, or volunteer.
11th Grade:
-Continue taking rigorous college-prep classes.
-Get the best grades you can this year as colleges look closely at your junior year.
-Register for the PSAT on October 17, 2012.
-Attend college presentations at St. Helena High School.
-Continue your extracurricular activities.
-Take AP exams in the spring.
-Take the SAT and/ or ACT this spring. Ask your counselor if you should repeat these exams.
-Ask your counselor if you should take the SAT Subject Exams.
-Update your resume file with new information and materials.
-Continue with your summer programs, work, volunteer opportunities, etc.
-Think about which teachers you will ask for letters of recommendations next year.
-Work on your college essays, art supplements, etc. over the summer.
12th Grade:
-Review your schedule with your counselor to ensure you taking the most rigorous schedule possible.
-Continue to maintain your GPA.
-Register for the SAT, ACT, and/ or SAT Subject Exams again.
-Continue your extracurriculars.
-Begin completing your applications with your counselor. Apply early!
-Ask your teachers and counselor for letters of recommendation.
-Ask your counselor and Mrs. Swan to help edit your essays.
-Apply for the local scholarship and financial aid.
-Take your AP exams.
-Always talk to your counselor about upcoming deadlines.
