Dear St. Helena Elementary School Families,

I am deeply grateful to join your school community as Principal of SHES. I have felt welcomed by staff, students and community members that I have met so far and I am happy that the time has now come for me to welcome you all back for the 2015-1016 school year. Together we can focus upon what matters most: our children. Supporting their social and academic development is at the heart of our mission and I hope to help us work (and play) together to make sure that ALL students succeed.

One of the roles I am most excited about is to serve as a bridge between home and school. I am confident that our staff is committed to collaborating to provide a safe and effective environment at school and I know that learning and development happens around the clock. We will share information and opportunities for you to learn about and be involved with what is happening at school throughout the year. That way, in case your question about what happened at school today? Is met with “Nothing,” you will have more specific details to work from so that you can follow up by asking your child(ren) about details regarding curriculum they being presented, events they participate in and pictures of learning and playing in action. As professionals, we are working throughout the school district to support all students as they progress from TK-12th grade in a systematic process that is tailored to meet individual and collective developmental needs. I am thrilled to focus most closely upon the 3-5th grade portion of this and to make sure that our school helps take students from where they left the primary grades and prepares them well for the Middle School.

Please review these key points with more to come soon:

    •          The first day of school is Wednesday, August 19th.  School begins at 8:35 a.m. with regular dismissal time at 3:10 p.m.  All Wednesdays will be early dismissal days, ending at 1:45 p.m. Students should arrive no earlier than 8:05.

    •          Class lists will be posted on the doors of the cafeteria which is the building across the walkway from the Boys and Girls club on Tainter Street at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 17th. The change in regular timing and location for posting is to accommodate finishing touches on construction to the front walkway and other areas of campus.

    •          Orientation for students and families new to the school: Monday, August 17th from 4:00 – 5:00 P.M.  Please join us in the auditorium for a brief meeting followed by a tour of the school grounds.

    •          Friday, August 21st we will hold a Whole School Community Sack Lunch Party from 12:00 - 12:45 p.m.  Parents are invited to attend and have lunch with their children.  Parents will need to bring their own lunch and please remember to sign in at the office and pick up a visitors pass.

    •          Our Back-to School Night is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  This is an informational evening for you to visit your student’s classroom to meet the classroom teacher and learn about the year to come.

    •          We welcome three new staff members this year.  Mr. Michael Bass will teach 4th grade, Ms. Debra Roberts will join the Special Education department as a Resource Specialist teacher and Ms. Jennifer Vidal has been hired to fill a new Intervention Specialist position that will focus upon supporting instruction and targeted student learning.

I am looking forward to a wonderful school year!
